Tasten-N-Racen 2009
Hydro racing was not my scene, “It does not interest me” I used to say.
I never tried to understand any of it, but I made my first appearance
at the 2009 APBA coordinated event “Tasten-N-Racen” in Issiquah, WA.
Tasten-N-Racen was a two day event featuring in short small boats, big boats, huge boats, loud turbine boats, and all boats in between. Vendors, hundreds of guests, and over 70 boats, take part in the annual event with each year attracting more and more attention.
Day 1 of the 2009 event I followed the lead of freelance photographer Julie Sparrowgrove, as I had never been to a hydro race before. I learned quickly what Julie loved about the races. I also heard a sound my speed favoring ears related to SPEED TV’s Pinks; The sound was made by the turbine engine of Albert Lee (U-48) Driver Brian Perkins, who I saw navigate the left corner as a rooster tail chased the driver around the track. There is something for everyone at these race events, It just takes time to figure out how and why to love hydro racing.
On the second day of the event I noticed it featured a car show but I missed it in writing this review of the event which was fun to write just as it was to watch. Today June 7th I stayed all day watching races getting to see my first hydro plane crash and I sought out for information trying to figure out what happened exactly since I missed it. Although I did not get any information that would point to the source of the crash, I was left with more questions. Who, What, Why was all I could think about after the interviews of which some crew members of both sides gave me a time when the two boats might be fixed, but I think 4 to 6 weeks is pushing it. I am no expert so I wouldn’t know for sure. The event was my first and it was exciting. There is not much I can say about this event but the fact that it was well organized and a lot of fun. Even though I didn’t cruse through the vendors booth. Next year I will try and make my way around to each vendor as Tasten-N-Racen has forever left a good first impression on me including everyone else who experienced the same things as I have at this APBA event.
